Phoenix Day 6 - Halloween Parties!!

The Proudfit family really knows how to celebrate Halloween! Tonight we went to two Halloween parties. The first one was at their church. There were games and face painting and a haunted house for the kids inside.
Outside was "Trunk or Treat." People line their cars up, open their trunks and decorate it. Then the kids go trick or treating at each car. It was lots of fun!

After dropping the kids off at home, we went to a Halloween party at Mike and Mel's. I've never seen a house decorated for Halloween like their house is! There were strobe lights, fog, all different kinds of lights and decorations everywhere you looked! And there was tons of yummy food too! Mike planned some very "different" games which were very fun to watch (I was too chicken to participate, lol). To read more about it and to see pictures click on Mel's blog "Life is Good" on the side bar.

Phoenix - Days 4 & 5

I have the most incredible son-in-law! Wednesday Taylor took the day off from work to stay home with the kids so Becky could have a 'day off' and she and I could spend the entire day together!

First stop - the outlet mall! We spent hours at the mall, doing some Christmas shopping and some clothes shopping! Becky made me try on clothes that I'd never even consider and I was so surprised when they looked good! She has a real knack for putting clothes together. I really should make some notes before I leave, lol.

Next stop - a late lunch at Firehouse Subs! After that Tay's mom, Judy, met us for pedicures! What is it about getting a pedicure that is so relaxing? Now I have toes that make me giggle again! We stopped at several more stores on the way home with a final stop at Baskin Robbins! What a great day........{sigh}!

Thursday after breakfast we put Lucy and Jameson into the stroller and went for a long walk to the playground!

I was so excited on the walk back home to see a road runner!!!
There was a definite nip in the air but the sun was warm and it felt so good to get some exercise! It's ironic that the week I come to visit Phoenix is having a "cold spell". I think it's very comfortable but the natives are freezing!

Thursday night was pumpkin carving night! The boys were interested for about two minutes and then went to play leaving Becky, Taylor and I to do the pumpkins all by ourselves!

Phoenix ~Day 3

It was a stay-at-home day for us today but not uneventful!

After Weston got home from school and Jameson woke up from his nap, we did some fun projects! First we made haunted houses using a Cocoa Krispy kit!
Next, Becky made a haunted house out of graham crackers and frosted it with purple frosting. We all decorated it with Halloween candy.

After that, Becky brought out some plaster Halloween figures for the boys to paint.
I can't believe we did all that stuff in such a short time!

Tonight we had dinner at Taylor's mom and stepdad's house. Their home is lovely and the food was delicious. I really enjoyed visiting with Tay's mom-Judy, his stepdad- Ron, brother-Dave and his wife-Heather. They are such nice people and I felt right at home with them!

Trip to Phoenix ~ Day 2

Today the boys had school so Becky and I headed out to WalMart so I could do my Christmas shopping for the kids. Lucy was an angel! She is a very good natured little girl!

Taylor came home from work early so we could go to the Pumpkin Farm! It is actually a ranch where they sell pumpkins! We had a ball! We went on a hayride, the boys rode horses, panned for gold, there were farm animals. And we got a huge pumpkin! Here are some pictures from the day:

Trip to Phoenix! Part 1

Here I am in Phoenix, visiting Becky and Taylor in their brand new home! It is huge, beautiful and in a great neighborhood! I have my own bedroom (which the kids call Grandma's room) and bathroom!
Becky and the kids met me at the airport. Wes was sleeping, Jameson recognized me and said "GrandPA!"
Lucy was all smiles!
Weston calls me Grandma Buffalo and told me he watches my show on TV. First day here we stopped at the "train park" and an outlet mall. I was exhausted at the end of the day having gotten up at 6:00AM Buffalo time, traveled all day and there is a 3 hour time difference.

This morning I got up and went to Mass at St. James Church, my Phoenix church home. They have a wonderful choir with lots of instruments, different aged singers and music I'd not heard before but really liked. Taylor's Dad Doug and his wife Linda were in town visiting so they came for breakfast along with Tay's brother Dave, his wife Heather and their kids. After breakfast we all went to the Mormon church where Weston's Sunday school class was part of a primary program. The church was filled with the voices of children singing! I accompanied Tay and Becky to their Sunday school class which was very interesting. Then I went with Becky to the young women's group that she teaches.

It sounds like it will be a very busy (and fun) week here with the Proudfits! More to follow........

The October Storm

My daughter-in-law recently wrote a blog about the October Storm that happened October 12, 2006. (http://sabretara.blogspot.com/2009/10/3-years-ago-today.html ) The storm and it's aftermath was incredible, in both a good way and a bad way. I wrote a blog back then about the first night:

Blessings during the blackout
Current mood: thankful

Thursday after work I went to the Blessed Sacrament Parish Center to set up refreshments for a concert that evening. I was treated to a mini concert by Christian singer Mitch McVicker and his band as they did a sound check. I left to hang up signs in the church and Cotter Hall directing people to the Parish Center. As I got into the van, Father Bill stuck his head out of the rectory and announced "We just lost power". The weather wasn't particularly bad and I figured it was a fluke. I went to cash my paycheck and then home to clean up where I learned that WE had lost power too.

The weather was "yucky" but I went back up to church to see what was going on with the concert. There were people waiting in cars to hear the concert so Mitch decided there would still be a concert - without electricity. Candles were brought over to light the stage. We all pulled our chairs up close to hear better. It had the feeling of sitting around a campfire singing praise to our Lord!!

It was a wonderful concert for about 50 of us who braved the weather- we sang along when we knew the words! Outside we could hear the thunder and see the different colored lightning but we were so engrossed in the music that it didn't matter. We stayed briefly for refreshments by candle light. People's cell phones started ringing urging concert goers to come home as the situation outside was quickly deteriorating. And when we went out to our cars, we could not believe what was happening all around. It was so quiet except for the sounds of branches breaking and falling. I felt at peace as I drove home through the obstacle course of fallen branches and power lines. Our God is indeed an awesome God!

Poor John - he spent the first four days when we didn't have power bailing out the sump pump every two hours. If he hadn't done that, our basement would have flooded like so many others'.

I have many fond memories of that week. It was a throw back to simpler times without all the electronic devices that keep us so busy. We have an old rotary phone so I was able to call other people with rotary phones (my mother-in-law) and people who found a place to charge their cell phones. We have an older gas stove which we could light with a match so we could cook. We didn't have alot of food in our freezer but we cooked what we could and the rest went into coolers which we put in the mounds of snow in front of our house or stored in the garage. We made a huge pot of soup and family and friends came to enjoy some hot food. I think we had company for meals every day!

We listened to the battery powered radio for updates. We couldn't go to work due to the driving ban, downed trees and powerlines. Most places were closed and activities cancelled. Since we couldn't vacuum, do laundry or watch TV we found other things to do. I read (by candlelight or lantern when it got dark)and played the piano. John played records on the victrola, we played cards and board games. We visited with neighbors outside and friends stopped by to visit (and to get a thermos of hot water). And we went to bed early!!

My mother-in-law was alone at her house in Cheektowaga without power for 6 days. We wanted to bring her to our house (especially after we got our power back on day 4) but she wanted to stay in her own house. I was worried about how and what she was going to eat but she is very enterprising. She brought a little tabletop grill inside. Then she took an empty tuna fish can, put it into the little grill and put 4tea lights in it and lit them (I'm not making this up). She put a little saucepan on the grill and she said there was enough heat from those tea lights to boil water for instant coffee or to heat up soup. She is amazing!!!

Sunday came and although there was a driving ban and no power, people came to church. Members of our contemporary choir came with instruments and the congregation was instructed to sit in the front since the microphones didn't work. It was amazing to see how many people came! We were thankful for the many blessings we realized we had and the opportunity to be together.

The October Storm taught me that simpler is better and we really don't "need" all the bells and whistles. Family, friends and faith is what's important.

Halloween Photo Album

These are pictures of my children growing up. Most of the costumes are homemade either by me (when they were little) or John (when they got older). The cowboy suit Jeff is wearing was actually John's when he was a kid! The Indian costumes and the pumpkin were borrowed. John did all the makeup and made Becky's Hi-C drink box costume!

Halloween Memories

I have been spending a considerable amount of time going through pictures and trying to organize them. It brought back many memories of Halloween past....

John and a friend of ours used to prank each other on Halloween every year. John made a very realistic "Haunt Real Estate" sign one year to put on her lawn. This mummy is another thing John made to prank our friend.
It was life sized, made out of paper mache and he left it on her front step to greet her in the morning when she opened the door. This was the year after our friend made a giant spider out of PVC pipe, put it on the top of John's jeep in the school parking lot and covered the jeep with spider webs!

John loved to go all out for Halloween when our kids were growing up. He'd make a graveyard in the front yard, adding to it every year. We had a haunted tree like in "The Wizard of Oz" and a stump with a face (Mr. Stumpy). Eventually he made a coffin and put light up eyes in it. If you look closely, you can see a ghost in the upstairs window (the face is a skeleton head lit from the bottom - very creepy)!

.

John is very creative even making a witch out of an old doll!! We gave alot of our stuff to Jeff and Tara so I sort of thought we were done with that, but it looks like we're going to have some new stuff this year! Some kids never grow up - thank goodness!
